The amazingly preserved Goldschieder statue made in 1937 prior to the German occupation of Austria is the "Madonna" designed by Adolf Prischl. It is a beautifully crafted figurine depicting the subject of the Madonna and featuring the famous sausage curls made famous by Prischl and other German artists of the period. Standing at 11 inches tall, this blue and white porcelain and ceramic sculpture is signed by the artist Adolf Prischl, on the back side at the base (see image).
Each of these beautiful figures were hand poured and glazed in Austria during the early 20th century. This art deco style piece is a licensed reproduction produced by the Goldschieder company just prior to their exodus when Germany occupied Austria. The Goldschieder company was siezed by the Nazis in 1938 and future products would be listed as Made in Germany. With its religious theme and artistic flair, this figurine would make a stunning addition to any antique collection or decorative or religious display. This piece is essentially flawless with no evidence of damage, chips or repairs. There is some very light crazing under the blue veil. Quite a statement for something of its age that was likely brought to America prior to the Second World War. The artist, Adolf Prischl, was born in Austria in 1912 and died in 1970.In 1929, he began is studies at the Wienberger Werksattenschule fur Keeramik where he studied under Robert Obsieger.
