Art Deco 1939 Herend Painted and Gilt Hungarian Porcelain Romantic Couple with Songbirds and Vizsla Dog Figural Group Tree-Trunk-Form Double-Trumpet-Vase. Underside with underglaze blue painted crowned shield mark, with impressed maker name, model number, and blue back-stamp for 100 year anniversary of the commercial founding by Fischer in 1839. Herend continues to operate its largely handmade business in Hungary, attracting several notable patrons, including Monarchs, other aristocracy and oligarchs.
Modeled by a currently unknown sculptor, this'romantic lovers' form has many iterations, some without the vase, and incorporates many exuberant colors, scrolls, and subjects in'peasant costume' of Rococo sculpture but is reduced, simplified to angularity and mannerism features typical restraint expected of contemporaneous Art Deco taste. In good condition, with age-appropriate losses to pigmentation due to wear and a kintsugi-type gilt stabilized repair to a scroll at edge of base.Additional information available on request.
