LARGE Art Deco French Ceramic Greyhound André Fau / Nicot 17.5 RARE
Large French Art Deco ceramic sculpture of a recumbent greyhound. The dog is finely modeled with strong anatomical detail, showing the elegant lines and musculature of the breed. The surface of the greyhound is finished in a deliberate all-over crackle-glaze, an effect intentionally produced by the maker and characteristic of the period. The integral base has a striking mottled blue-gray and brown marbled-glaze, with a glossy, stone-like appearance that sets off the figure beautifully. The overall design is a true hallmark of the Art Deco era. The underside is marked "André Fau" and bears a circular Boulogne factory stamp, along with Made in France. " The name "NICOT also appears on the underside; unlike the stamped factory marks, this name appears to be hand-incised into the clay, with visible start-and-stop tool marks. This suggests a hand-inscribed signature or modeler's notation made prior to firing, consistent with studio production practices of the period. No chips, cracks, dings, or repairs are noted. The greyhound displays a uniform intentional crackle-glaze finish, while the base retains its smooth, glossy mottled marbled glaze without crackling.
