Enrobed in a lovely white glaze, this classic example of stylized Art Deco sculpture was created by Geza de Vegh, an important artist and ceramicist who created a line of porcelain pieces for the Lamberton Scammell company in Trenton, New Jersey. This example, one of the rarest, depicts a high-spirited horse restrained by a female figure in flowing robes, all expressed in elegant form. De Vegh's importance in 1930s America is only now becoming understood, including his popularity among set designers in Hollywood; for example, his works are evident in the background of important Bette Davis films such as "Now Voyager" and The Letter.
